In Interfolio, "sending a case forward" simply means to move the case to the next case step, as shown in the Case Review Steps section of the Edit Case screen.

When we think of sending a review case forward, we often think of sending it "to someone" or "to an office." In Interfolio, the "Send Forward" button works in terms of the case steps. If different committee(s) or administrators are assigned to the next case step as compared to the current one, then those committees and administrators will gain access to the case and a notification email (if this option is not deselected when sending forward) will be sent to the members of the committee. However, if the people with case access at the next step are the same as those at the current step, the case won't be sent to anybody "new." Instead, it just advances a step.

Before sending a case forward, we advise that administrators check the committee membership on the next step (by clicking the "Edit Details" button on that committee) to make sure they're ready to send the case forward. If you don't have administrative privileges in Interfolio, you'll need to have someone who does perform this check. Also, keep in mind that if you don't have administrative or committee access at the next step, the case will not be accessible for you once it's sent forward.

Likewise, when an administrator knows that a case needs to be "sent to" another academic unit (such as a school or the Academic Affairs and Personnel Office), they can look at the case steps to see how many times the "Send Forward" button must be clicked (i.e., how many steps advanced), and what steps are still between the current step and the "target" one.
