In terms of Opus functionality, the notion of “action” primarily serves to distinguish between types of cases. In terms of UCLA policy, an action describes a potential change to (or creation of) an academic appointment. In an Opus context, cases and actions are often regarded as the same thing.

Note that we say “potential change” above because cases feature a range of possible outcomes — for example, if a case is approved, the appointment may be updated; if it’s disapproved, the appointment may not, etc.
