Case steps appear in Interfolio, and provide a means of chronologically tracking the status of the case, as well as managing case access and associating it with this status.

Case steps appear in the "Edit Case" interface, which is accessed by clicking the "Case Options" button in Interfolio's case view. Steps proceed in order from the first to the last. Different types of cases have different series of steps. Each step has at least one committee assigned to it, and members of the committee(s) assigned to a case's current step can access materials from the case. When a case moves to a diffferent step, these committee members (unless they're also on a committee assigned at that step) lose access to the case.

Case steps also provide a framework for granting case access to administrators. When editing a step, administrators can view a list of administrators associated with the case's academic unit. This list also includes admins from units that contain the unit in which the case was started (so, university- and school-level admins appear in the list for cases started by departments). Case access can be configured on a step-by-step basis by recusing these administrators through this interface.
