The Opus Website features some elements which appear repeatedly on different pages. Some of these, such as the Top Menu, appear on every page while others, such as the Subpage Menu, appear only where necessary. This article describes many of these common elements. One element conspicuously missing from this article is the data table, which appears often but is not featured here because it is described in its own articles, linked near the bottom of this page.

Top Menu

Along the top edge of every Opus page is a blue menu bar, called the Top Menu:

The Top Menu features the following five items:

Opus logo

Clicking this logo takes the user to the Dashboard page.

Home Link

Clicking this link takes the user to the Dashboard page.

Jump To Link

Clicking this link unrolls a submenu below it. Clicking items in this submenu allows users to navigate to all other pages in the Opus Website. Note that some of these pages may not be visible, depending on your permissions in Opus:

Each of the above pages is the topic of its own support article, linked near the bottom of this page.

Help Link

Clicking this link takes the user to the Opus Support site.

Logout Link

Clicking this link logs the user out of Opus, taking them to the logout screen for the UCLA Logon system.

Subpage Menu and Main Area

The Main Area is the portion of an Opus page that displays content, often a data table. The Main Area typically covers the entire space between the Top Menu and the Footer Menu, however at times it shifts sideways to allow for the Subpage Menu on the left. On pages like the one shown in the screenshot below, clicking items in the Subpage Menu (A) changes the content displayed in the Main Area (B).

Footer Menu

Along the bottom of every Opus page is a blue menu bar with seven clickable items and a copyright notice.

The Footer Menu features links from the following two categories:

Pages Within Opus

These links connect to pages on the Opus website. Because these pages are informational, their titles provide their own explanation:

  • About

  • FAQ

  • Governance

  • Privacy

  • Opus Team

Pages Outside Opus

These links connect to pages at the UCLA Academic Personnel Office website:

  • Academic Personnel Office

  • Academic Review Policy

Tooltips

The Opus website features built-in explanations for menus, terms and features. These explanations are available wherever the tooltip icon appears. This is a small blue circle with a white question mark (?) symbol, as shown in the screenshot below. Tooltip explanations appear when a user "rolls over" the tooltip icon with their mouse pointer. Tooltips often convey explanations for particular terms or topics, or instructions for performing tasks.

Pencil and Trash Can Icons

The Opus Website offers many instances where users can edit or delete data. This functionality is often accessed by clicking a pencil or trash can icon.

These icons appear next to the data they affect:

The Pencil Icon allows editing.

The Trash Can Icon allows deletion.

Modal Windows

Certain activities in Opus involve specific, sequential steps. Often these steps require the user to enter information that Opus uses to direct them to the next step. For such activities, the Opus website often opens a smaller window in front of an existing page, which is then grayed out. This smaller window is called a modal window, or just a modal.

Modals are used on many pages of the Opus website. They typically feature inputs, instructions and buttons, which are self-explanatory (or which are addressed elsewhere on this Support Site). Modal windows typically have an "X" icon in their upper-right corner. Clicking this icon closes the modal and cancels the process associated with it (losing any progress the user has made in the modal). Alternatively, users may reload the page using the web browser's controls, which will close the modal, cancel its process (again, losing all progress), and reset the page.
